You keep hearing about CDPs. Your agency is pitching them. Your SaaS vendor says they have one built in. But do you actually need a customer data platform, or is a CRM enough? The answer depends on what problem you're trying to solve.
See This in Action
First-party data strategies work best when you have the right tools and team supporting you. XerAds combines AI-powered content, managed Google Ads, and full-stack development in one platform. Start your free account and see how brands like yours are building sustainable data pipelines.
CRMs work well when your primary data challenge is "I don't know who my customers are." They don't work as well when your challenge is "I have data in six places and nothing talks to anything."
What a CDP Actually Does
A CDP unifies customer data from multiple sources into a single profile. It pulls from your website, your email tool, your ads, your app, your point of sale. It resolves identity across devices and channels. And it makes that unified profile available to every tool downstream.
If you have data scattered across more than three tools and you want to activate it in more than two channels, you need a CDP. If your data lives mostly in one place and your primary use case is email marketing, you probably don't.
When to Use What
E-commerce doing under $1M/year: Klaviyo has enough CDP capability. You don't need a separate Segment + Salesforce stack. Keep it simple.
E-commerce doing $1M-$10M/year: Klaviyo for email and SMS. A shared Segment workspace to unify web and app data. A BI tool like Looker or Databox for reporting. That's enough.
B2B or high-consideration products: HubSpot's free CRM is the right starting point. Build from there. Only upgrade to enterprise when you hit HubSpot's limits.
Complex multi-brand or multi-channel operations: Segment + a data warehouse (BigQuery or Snowflake) + a reverse ETL tool like Hightouch. This is the real enterprise setup.
The Honest Answer
Most SMBs don't need a CDP. They need better habits around the tools they already have. Klaviyo users: you're sitting on a CDP. Use it. HubSpot users: same. Activate your CRM data before you buy something new.
The expensive CDP only pays off when your data volume and activation complexity actually justify the overhead.
