Indonesia's Personal Data Protection (PDP) law came into full effect in late 2024. If you're collecting data on Indonesian citizens, you are subject to it. That means every email list, every customer database, every pixel you fire -- all of it needs to be PDP-compliant.
See This in Action
First-party data strategies work best when you have the right tools and team supporting you. XerAds combines AI-powered content, managed Google Ads, and full-stack development in one platform. Start your free account and see how brands like yours are building sustainable data pipelines.
Data minimization: Collect only what you need. If you don't need a phone number to deliver your service, don't ask for it. PDP enforces this principle. More data collected than necessary means more liability.
Purpose limitation: Data collected for one purpose can't be used for another without new consent. You collected emails for order confirmations. Using that list for marketing requires separate consent.
Security obligations: You must implement reasonable security measures. If you get breached and customer data leaks, you have 72 hours to notify the data protection authority. This is a hard requirement.
What This Means for Your Email List
Every subscriber needs to have given valid consent. A checkbox they didn't see doesn't count. A pre-ticked box doesn't count. Buying a third-party email list and calling it your first-party data definitely doesn't count.
Audit your list. Remove addresses that didn't give clear consent. If you don't have records showing when and how each person consented, treat that subscriber as unconsented.
The Practical Steps for Compliance
First, update your forms. Every opt-in form needs a clear explanation of what you're collecting and why. No pre-ticked boxes. Consent must be a deliberate action.
Second, build your consent records. When someone subscribes, store the date, the IP, the form they filled, and what they consented to. This is your proof if you ever get audited.
Third, honor opt-outs immediately. When someone unsubscribes, remove them from all marketing sequences. Same day, not next week.
Fourth, map your data flows. Where does data come in, where is it stored, who has access, where does it go. You need this documentation for compliance reporting.
The Opportunity in PDP
Ironically, PDP compliance forces you to have better data hygiene. Smaller, cleaner lists actually outperform huge unsegmented lists in email marketing. Better consent practices mean more engaged subscribers. The brands that get ahead of this now will have both compliance and better marketing results.
