Blackstone is forming a joint venture with Google to build a new cloud company focused entirely on TPU-based AI compute, with $5 billion in equity committed from Blackstone funds and Google contributing hardware, software, and TPU intellectual property. The venture aims to bring 500 megawatts of U.S. TPU data center capacity online by 2027, targeting AI labs and enterprises that need dedicated access to Google's custom AI chips without building their own infrastructure.
Why TPU Cloud Makes Sense Right Now
TPUs are Google's custom AI accelerators, designed specifically for large-scale model training and inference. Unlike general-purpose GPUs, TPUs excel at matrix operations that dominate AI workloads. Several AI labs have expressed interest in TPU access but cannot afford to build or operate their own TPU clusters. The Blackstone-Google venture enters a market where NVIDIA-focused clouds have dominated, but Google's TPUs offer a different price-performance tradeoff that may appeal to specific workloads including large language model inference and computer vision at scale.
The venture's go-to-market strategy will focus on AI labs, research institutions, and enterprises with existing Google relationships. The ability to offer TPU access alongside Google Cloud services creates a natural customer base that is already familiar with Google's enterprise tools and procurement processes.
