Google I/O 2026 kicked off at the Shoreline Amphitheatre with a keynote heavy on AI announcements, as expected. This year's centerpiece was Gemini Intelligence, an agentic AI layer woven into Android that Google is positioning as the next-generation interface for mobile computing. The presentation made clear that Google sees voice-first, AI-mediated interactions as the default way users will engage with their devices within a few years.
Android XR glasses were the other major hardware announcement. Google confirmed it is previewing glasses powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, running a specialized XR operating system built on top of Android. The glasses are designed for ambient computing, delivering information and assistance without requiring users to look at a phone screen. Google is entering a hardware category that Apple and Meta have already explored, but with what it describes as deeper AI integration into the visual overlay.
Gemini Intelligence: More Than a Voice Assistant
Google described Gemini Intelligence as an agentic layer that sits between apps and users. Rather than opening individual apps to complete tasks, users describe what they want to accomplish and Gemini Intelligence coordinates across apps to deliver a result. The distinction matters because it shifts the interaction model from app-centric to goal-centric.
Internally, Google is comparing the shift to the earlier transition from desktop icons to app drawers. The analogy is imperfect, but it signals that Google views this as a foundational change in how Android works rather than a new feature layered on top.
Android XR Glasses
The XR glasses run a version of Android modified for extended reality displays. Gemini 2.5 Pro runs locally on the glasses, processing voice commands and generating visual overlays without round trips to cloud servers for every interaction. Google said this design choice was deliberate, prioritizing latency and privacy for the kinds of tasks users will perform hands-free.
The glasses work with existing Android apps through a compatibility layer. Developers do not need to write separate XR-specific versions of their apps, though Google acknowledged that apps designed for XR from the start will offer better experiences. Google Play availability for XR apps is planned for later this year.
Googlebooks: The New Premium Laptop
Googlebooks is a new premium laptop category running ChromeOS with Gemini Intelligence built in. Google positioned it as the replacement for Chromebooks in education and enterprise, offering a dedicated hardware platform for AI-first workflows. The device starts at $999 and includes a dedicated AI key that launches Gemini Intelligence from any context.
What This Means for Android Developers
The I/O announcements create a new urgency for Android developers to ensure their apps work well with agentic workflows. Google is explicitly training users to describe goals rather than navigate apps, which means apps that expose clear intent interfaces will perform better in the new interaction model. Developers attending I/O sessions this week will get early access to the Gemini Intelligence API for app integration.
